Hypospadias is a common congenital condition in which the urethral opening is on the underside of the penis instead of the tip. Hormonal abnormalities and environment play an important role in causing Hypospadias, family history, genetic and exposure to pesticides and chemical are the risk factors.
Signs of Hypospadias include a urethral opening located other than the tip of the penis, downward curve of the penis, presence of abnormal spraying during urination is seen.
Physical examination by a pediatric urologist can diagnose the condition and go for further evaluation and treatment.
Surgical Management Children with Hypospadias require surgery between 3 to 18 months, Circumcision should not be performed before the surgery. The procedure includes straightening of the penis and creates a penis with normal function and appearance by making the urethral opening close to the tip of the penis. The urologist uses the skin from other parts of the body or foreskin to repair the opening.
